Background of the Study
Biometric authentication is increasingly used in academic institutions for securing access to university portals, which store sensitive information such as student records, grades, and financial details. While biometric systems, such as fingerprint and facial recognition, are widely used, their security can be compromised through spoofing, hacking, or other attacks. Quantum-based biometric authentication systems offer enhanced security by using quantum principles, making it more difficult for unauthorized users to bypass the system (Liu et al., 2023). Quantum-enhanced biometric systems could integrate quantum random number generators for better encryption and use quantum computing for more sophisticated recognition algorithms.
At Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, where securing student and faculty data on university portals is a priority, quantum-based biometric authentication could significantly improve security. This study will explore the development of a quantum-based biometric authentication system tailored to the university's specific needs, integrating quantum cryptography and advanced biometric recognition techniques.
Statement of the Problem
While current biometric authentication systems provide a reasonable level of security, they are still vulnerable to advanced attacks, such as spoofing, phishing, and unauthorized access. The rising threats in cybersecurity demand the adoption of more secure systems, including quantum-based solutions, to protect sensitive university data from malicious entities. However, the application of quantum computing in biometric authentication is still in its infancy, particularly in the context of Nigerian universities. This study aims to develop and evaluate a quantum-based biometric authentication system to enhance the security of university portals at Federal University, Wukari.
Objectives of the Study
To design a quantum-based biometric authentication system for university portals at Federal University, Wukari.
To assess the effectiveness of the quantum-based biometric system in enhancing portal security.
To identify the challenges and opportunities in implementing quantum-based biometric systems for student and faculty portals.
Research Questions
How can a quantum-based biometric authentication system be designed for university portals at Federal University, Wukari?
How does the quantum-based biometric authentication system compare to traditional biometric systems in terms of security and accuracy?
What challenges are faced in implementing quantum-based biometric systems at Federal University, Wukari?
Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the potential of quantum computing to enhance biometric authentication systems, offering higher security for university portals. The findings will guide Federal University, Wukari, in adopting advanced technologies for securing sensitive data and improving overall cybersecurity.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the development and implementation of quantum-based biometric authentication systems at Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State. It will not cover other universities or biometric systems outside the academic portal context.
